Sodium symporters can be divided by sequence and functional similarity
into various groups. One such group is the sodium/alanine symporter family,
the members of which transport alanine in association with sodium ions.
These transporters are believed to possess 8 transmembrane (TM) helices
[1,2], forming a channel or pore through the cytoplasmic membrane, the
interior face being hydrophilic to allow the passage of alanine molecules
and sodium ions [1]. At present, only three members of this family have been
identified: the alanine carrier protein from the thermophilic bacterium
PS-3; the D-alanine/glycine permease from Alteromonas haloplanktis; and the
hypothetical protein yaaJ from E.coli.
 
NAALASMPORT is a 6-element fingerprint that provides a signature for the 
sodium/alanine symporters. The fingerprint was derived from an initial
alignment of 3 sequences: motif 1 spans the first TM region, which includes
the area encoded by PROSITE pattern NA_ALANINE_SYMP (PS00873); motifs 2-4
describe TM regions 3-5; motif 5 includes most of TM domain 6; and motif 6
encodes TM domain 8 (TM regions 2 and 7 were not sufficiently well
conserved to be included in the fingerprint). A single iteration on
OWL22.1 was required to reach convergence, no further sequences being
identified beyond the starting set. 
 
An update on SPTR37_9f identified a true set of 12 sequences, and 2
partial matches.
