Documentation
The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) belongs to
the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. It is a member of 
the ABC-C subfamily, which also contains the SUR receptors and the multidrug-
resistance associated proteins (MRP) [1]. The CFTR protein encodes a 
chloride ion channel, which is controlled by phosphorylation. It has a major
role in electrolyte and fluid secretion. CFTR is important in the 
determination of fluid flow, ion concentration and transepithelial salt
transport. Dysfunction of the CFTR channel causes the life-threatening
disease, cystic fibrosis, in which transepithelial ion transport is 
disrupted [2].
 
CYSFIBREGLTR is a 12-element fingerprint that provides a signature for the
cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulators. The fingerprint was 
derived from an initial alignment of 5 sequences: the motifs were drawn from
conserved regions spanning virtually the full alignment length - motif 1
encodes the region of the protein lining the pore and includes residues
responsible for the anion selectivity of the channel; motif 3 is located in
an intracellular loop; motif 5 resides in a pore loop. Two iterations on
SPTR40_18f were required to reach convergence, at which point a true set
comprising 19 sequences was identified.
