Tachykinins, which comprise a family of closely related peptides with 
the common C-terminal sequence FxGLM, participate in the regulation of 
diverse biological processes, such as neurotransmission and neuromodulation
[1-3]. The tachykinin peptides substance P, neurokinin A, neurokinin A(3-10),
neuropeptide K and neuropeptide gamma are produced from a single prepro-
tachykinin gene as a result of differential RNA splicing and differential 
post-translational processing [1]. Preprotachykinin mRNAs are differentially
distributed throughout the nervous system, with the alpha isoform found 
abundantly in the brain, and the beta and gamma isoforms found mainly in
peripheral tissues [1,2].
 
PROTACHYKNIN is a 6-element fingerprint that provides a signature for the
protachykinin 1 precursors. The fingerprint was derived from an initial
alignment of 7 sequences: the motifs were drawn from conserved regions
spanning the full alignment length - motif 1 encodes the putative signal
peptide; motifs 2 and 3 lie in the adjacent region of the precursor peptide;
motif 4 includes the region encoding substance P; motif 5 encodes the
central portion (present in all isoforms) of the neuropeptide K sequence;
and motif 6 is located at the C-terminus. Two iterations on SPTR40_20f
were required to reach convergence, at which point a true set comprising
11 sequences was identified. A single partial match was also found,
Q9Y6V5, a human protein whose sequence is likely to contain errors and 
which, as a result, fails to match motifs 5 and 6.
