Selectins belong to a family of cell surface glycoproteins that has 3 main 
divisions [1]: (i) endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules (ELAM-1) -
these are cytokine inducible endothelial cell surface glycoproteins 
involved in the adherence of neutrophils; (ii) lymphocyte adhesion molecule
(Lam-1) and its homologues - these are involved in the movement of lympho-
cytes between the vascular and lymph systems by selective adherence to the 
high endothelial venules in peripheral lymph nodes [2]; and (iii) granule 
membrane protein 140 (GMP-140) - this is stored in platelets and Weibel-
Palade bodies endothelial cells, and, upon induction by thrombin, is 
rapidly mobilised to the cell surface where it mediates neutrophil and 
monocyte adhesion [3]. 
 
Members of the selectin superfamily have the same domain structure: they
have an N-terminal lectin domain followed by an EGF repeat; a variable 
number (between 2 and 9) of complement regulatory elements; a single trans-
membrane region; and a short cytoplasmic anchor [1]. Some studies have 
found distinct carbohydrate structures on leukocytes that are adhered to by
selectins, suggesting that selectins are involved in the selective 
trafficking of blood-borne components of the immune system [1].
 
SELECTIN is a 4-element fingerprint that provides a signature for the
selectin superfamily. The fingerprint was derived from an initial alignment
of 6 sequences: the motifs were drawn from the complement binding repeat
region. Two iterations on OWL19.0 were required to reach convergence, at
which point a true set comprising 15 sequences was identified. Several
partial matches were also found: these include subsets of complement
receptor proteins that match just 2 or 3 motifs (3 of these, a serine
protease and 2 apolipoprotein H sequences, have been shown to contain the
`sushi' repeats of complement binding proteins).
 
An update on SPTR37_9f identified a true set of 24 sequences, and 2
partial matches.
